Dear Ms.Zrihen I told you that I abandoned my book in the last readers journal but then I told my mom and she said I did the wrong choice because she said in the end you will understand every thing. So I decided to give it another try.
My two before reading strategies were looking for prologue, epilogue, table of contents, pictures ETC.
My two during reading strategies were asking myself questions about the book, and I also Skim and Scanned through the rest of the book.

Dear Ms. Zrihen I am currently reading the book Dawn by Elie Wiesel. I picked this book because it won a Nobel peace prize in 1986, and because my sister recommended it to me and because it is about Elie Wiesel's experience  in the holocaust because he was a survivor.
The passage I chose was on page 40 "God saved me from death, Gideon repeated . " His eyes saved me. I too was arrested and tortured. They pulled my beard, lit matches under my fingernails, and spat on my face, all in order to make me confess that I had taken part in an attempt against the life of the High Commissioner. But in spite of the pain i\I did not talk. More than once I was tempted to cry out, but I kept quiet because I felt that God's eyes were upon me. God is looking at me, I said to myself, and I must not disappoint Him. My tortures never stopped shouting, but I kept my thoughts on God and on His eyes, which are drawn to human pain. For lack of evidence they finally got to set me free. If I had admitted my guilt I should be dead."
The two before reading strategies I used before reading the book was that I skim and scanned through the book and I asked my self questions like if I ever read a book from Elie Wiesel. The two reading strategies I used during reading the book was that I reread important pages in the book and I brainstormed what would happen next in the story. I am not done with the book yet but I think my two reading strategies will be summarize and discuses the book with somebody else who also read it.

Odysseus

    rj#6

    10-5-11

Dear Ms. Zrihen I am not reading the book Odysseus anymore by Gerald McCaughrean.
I abandoned it because first I think it was to challenging for me and I did not understand it. That is why I abandoned it.
My first reason that I abandoned this book was because it was to challenging for me. One reason why this book was to challenging for me was because the words I did not know if it was a person a place or a thing. For example: Telemachus, bougainvilleas for that word I had no clue at all what it meant.
Another reason why I abandoned this book was because I did not understand what it meant. This book (Odysseus) was complicated for me. It was complicated for me because there was two stories in 1 book kind of at the same time. Also again the words were very complicated in the book so that was hard to understand in the book.
That is why I abandoned the book. Again the two reasons that I abandoned the book was because I thought that the book was complicated and because it was to challenging for me. Now that I know that this book was not good in my opinion so I would rate this book a three or four out of a ten.It got bad at about page seventy something I do not quite remember.

Dear Ms. Zrihen, I an currently reading the book Odysseus by Geraldine McCaughrean.
I picked this book because the librarian told me that it was a good folktale. My favorite part so far in this book was on page 1 when he says he has not see his father for 10 years all ready.
The two reading strategies I used was that before I started to read the book I Skim and Scanned through the pictures, table of contents, and the chart. I also read the synopsis. The two reading strategies I used while I was reading the book was that I reread hard pages and I asked myself questions about the book so far for example:  why would people eat fruit from a lotus tree. The Power of Song.

 RJ #4
 9/21/11

Dear Ms. Zrihen

I am currently reading the book, The Power of Song.
I picked the book The Power Of Song, because the librarian recommended it to me. There are a lot of story's in this book favorite story was called The Power of Song. My favorite passage in this book was when on page nine and ten when in so time soon the kings son had to read from the Torah and after a couple weeks of practicing he did not even know the Alef bet.  I picked the passage because a kid who needs to read from the Torah soon he dose not even know the Alef bet.
The two reading strategies I used before reading the book was that I read the synopsis and I also Skim and Scanned through the story titles, pictures, preface, table of contents, and the acknowledgments. The two reading strategies I used during reading the book was that I asked myself questions about the book so far. I also reread the pages/ chapters that I read and marked already. The two reading strategies I will use when I am done with the book will be ask my self questions about the book to see if I really understood the book. Another after reading will be looking back in the story for more clues.
       The genera is fiction folktale.
The characters in the story: The Power Of Song are:
The king. His son. The Sage. The songster.
setting was in a temple, kings palace.

The characters for the story: a friend for a king are:
The king. The Vizier. Sar. Asilha. There kids Ovadia, Salman, Sancho.
Setting was in the kings palace, kings house.
Those were my two favorites so far.
The problem is that the kings son does not know how to read better yet he dose not even know the alef bet and he needs to read from the Torah in some time (soon). The rising action is that he dose not know how to read from the Torah.
 Tone - Imaginative
Mood- happy

The Giver.

RJ #3                                                                                                                               9/14/11

Dear Ms. Zrihen, I am currently reading the book The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I picked the book The Giver because my sister recommended it to me. Also because this book won a award. My favorite passage in the book was:
"With the chant, Jonas knew, the community was accepting him and his new role, giving him life, the way they had given it to the new child Caleb. His heart swelled with gratitude and pride.
But at the same time he was filled with fear. he did not know what his selection meant. He did not know what he was to become.
Or what was to become of him." (page 64)
I picked this passage because I feel that Jonas, someone who lives in a perfect world, can fear something like a college graduate can feel, in an imperfect world, and they both don't know they fear it.
The significance of this passage to the book is because this is the moment in the book where Jonas' life was changed completely, and where I think that the whole book will really begin.

The two reading strategies I used before reading the book was that I Skim and Scanned through the pictures, and I read the synopsis. The two reading strategies I used while I was reading the book was that I asked myself questions about the book so far , for example  My next reading strategy was that went reread the pages/chapters that I marked that I did not understand so well. I did not finish reading the book but my after reading strategies are going to be summarizing the book to someone else and discussing the book with someone who already read it.

Genre: Realistic Fiction/Science Fiction
Characters: Jonas- Protagonist. He is the main character in the book, the one that will be the next giver.
The Giver-  The most important and respected man in the community. He is the one that teaches Jonas about love, hate, pain, colors, and everything else that no one experiences in their perfect community.
Asher- Jonas' best friend. He will be the assistaint director of creation.
Fiona- Jonas' other best friend. She is given the job of Caretaker of the Old.
Jonas' Parents, Jonas sister Lily.
There is no antagonist in the story.
Everyone else surrounding Jonas is the foil. The setting is in a perfect world in the month of December. Everyone was the exactly the same, everyone was perfect. The plot structure of the story is when Jonas begins to get knowledge that other people in the community don't have and he begins to see life differently. The conflicts in the story is character vs. society, and a little bit of character vs. self. The tone of the story is imaginative, curious, and hopeful. The mood of the story was sometimes happy, but sometimes sad. The book is told from a 3rd person point of view. The authors purpose was to entertain you and inform you about how like could be in a perfect world. The authors perspective was objective. Some different types of figurative language is "flat bellied cargo", "I likes the feeling of love", and "I feel his fright". I rate this book a eight so far because this book is very interesting.

I would skim and scan to look for pictures, publications, dedications and more.  The two reading strategies I have used while I was reading the book was that I asked myself questions about what I have read so far and I looked back in the story for more clues and details. The questions I ask myself for example is why would you want to kill Old Yeller for one mistake he made. Its like if you have a dog or a cat and they rip your pillow will you want to kill him. If you were smart you would know that dog and cats are not smart so they don't know if they did something bad or not. I still don't know what two reading strategies I will use when I am done reading the book but I have half a idea of what I think it will be it will probably be asking myself more questions about the book like the one I have just showed you, and my next one I don't know yet but also probably read the challenging pages I marked again. The genera of this book is fiction. The characters so far are Old Yeller, mama, papa, Arliss, Travis and the neighbors so far. This story takes place in there house in the woods and in there neighbors house also out side. The protagonist is Old Yeller mama papa Arliss but there is still on antagonist yet. The foils are the neighbors. The climax was when he saw Old Yeller fights the bear. The main problem is that the family gets in danger several times and Old Yeller saves them. It is character vs nature. I think the authors purpose to write this story is to entertain. The authors perspective of writing this story is subjective and bias. The tone was good and the mood was exiting. My point of view of this story so far is excellent but still not better than the movie. I would rate this book a eight and a half because the book is interesting but i don't want to rate it a nine or a ten just yet first I want to finish reading the book. So that is what I would rate this book.
